MyTravelGuide

A mobile app concept that helps travelers easily create trip itineraries.

Planning trips can be difficult, especially if one is traveling to a new place. The process can feel very overwhelming and people often do not know where to start. For my midterm project, I was tasked with designing a digital product that could improve people's travel planning experience.

My Role

User Research
Interaction Design

Duration

Problem

Travelers need an easy way to create travel itineraries so they can maximize their visit at their destination.

Outcome

MyTravelGuide, a mobile app concept that helps travelers easily create trip itineraries. The platform was designed to guide users through a step-by-step process that results in a travel guide that includes hotel, transportation, and event plans.

The full interactive prototype can be found here.

Create & view trips

Users can easily build trip itineraries under the "Your Trips" page. Once created, users will be guided through 3 simple steps that will result in an itinerary that includes hotel, transportation, and activity plans.

User Interviews

I interviewed two classmates in order to determine what problem existed. I wanted to learn about their travel experiences and understand the challenges they encountered. I discovered the following issues:

Lack of experience

People often do not know where to begin when planning a trip.

Information overload

People experience information confusion when it comes to the internet and existing guide books.

Failure to stay organized

People do not know how to effectively organize the information they have gathered for trips.

Based on these insights, I realized that my users' pain points appeared during the planning process of a trip. As a result, I decided to focus my product on itinerary planning.

"How Might We" Statement

I reframed my insights into the following HMW statement to help generate possible solutions.

"How might we design a product that helps travelers efficiently build trip itineraries?"

Brainstorm

With my research and personas in mind, I brainstormed different ways I could address the defined problem.

At this point, I decided that I would create a mobile application because people typically only carry their phones when traveling. By doing so, users would be able to easily reference their travel information.

Key Takeaways

Overall, this was a class project that I really enjoyed working on. I was able to build on my skills in digital product design and gained more experience designing with Figma.

Going forward, I would love to explore more features, as I only had time to focus on a few key actions. It would be interesting to add features that would allow users to review and confirm reservations. I would also want to conduct formal usability tests since I did not have the opportunity to do so. I am interested to learn how travelers would use my product and if it could improve their travel experiences.
